ABSTRACT
This paper describes the observations during an experiment designed to study the response of polymorphonuclear leukocytes in
E. tenella infections with chickens treated with 5-fluorouracil as a granulocytopenic agent. One hundred and twenty broilers were randomly assigned into the following 4 groups of 30 birds each: Group 1, control group or white group; Group 2 treated with 200 mg/kg body weight of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU); Group 3 infected orally with 5,000 sporulated oocysts of
Eimeria tenella, and Group 4 infected with
E. tenella after 5-FU treatment.
E. tenella was given to 5 chicks in each group at one of the following days: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12, 5-FU postinoculation (17 days of age). Seven days postinfection, histopathologic preparations of several organ tissues were made. Several life-stages of
E. tenella were observed in the bursa of Fabricius in 25 and 24 chickens in Groups 3 and 4, respectively. Moderate or severe epithelial hyperplasia, subepithelial mononuclear infiltrate, and occasionally intraepithelial cysts were associated with the developing parasites.
