ABSTRACT
The objective of this study was to compare the efficiency of pregnancy diagnosis in Pelibuey sheep made by non-return to estrus using ultrasonography, abdominal palpation and udder size determination on days 30 and 60. Nineteen adult ewes were synchronized using recycled subcutaneous ear implants of Norgestomet in the State of Guerrero, Mexico. Ewes were served by intact males and the non-return rate was evaluated from day 14 to 21 post-service, A-scan ultrasonography was performed on day 30 on tested females in sitting posture, while on day 60 it was done in standing ones. Abdominal palpation and udder size evaluation for pregnancy testing were made in fasted ewes 90 days after mating. Lambing records from the experimental flock were registered, and data was analized by X
2 test. Accuracy for detecting pregnancy was greater (P‹0.05) for non-return to estrus (89.4%) and ultrasonography on day 60 (73.7%) than the ultrasonography on day 30 (47.3%), and the abdominal palpation (47.3%). Mammary gland evaluation had an accuracy of 63.1%, which was not different from the other groups evaluated (P›0.05). It is concluded that non-return to estrus and doppler ultrasonic on day 60 post-estrus are the most accurate techniques for field determination of pregnancy in Pelibuey sheep.
