ABSTRACT
Bovine somatotropin (BST-R) was injected intramuscularly (IM) to 72 hybrid tilapies (
Oreochromis mossambicus x O. niloticus). Fish were randomly divided in 6 groups of 3 fish each and 4 replicates per group. In the first experiment, increasing doses (7.55, 5.00, 2.50, 1.25, 0.62 and 0 µ g/g of fish) of BST-R were administered to each group in order to determine the best dose response effect. In a second trial, 5.00 µ g/g of fish was injected to 300 hybrid tilapies with an average of 14 ± 2.7 g in 4 groups of 30 fish each with three replicates. Groups 2a and 2b received a single dose of 5 µ g/g of BST-R I.M. in a controlling temperature between 22 to 24 °C for Group 2a, and between 25 to 27 °C for Group 2b. There was a control Group for both groups, which was injected I.M. with 0.1 ml of sesame oil per fish. These experiments were followed during 8 weeks. BST-R treated groups showed a statistically significant (P‹0.01) increment in growth and weight, and this was evident on the fifth week. Food consumption was also greater in the treated groups during this period. Temperature did not influence body weight nor growth, and no differences were detected regarding body composition. However, mortality rate was greater in the control- than in the treated groups. Although growth and body weight were significatnly enhanced by the injection of BST-R, reduction in mortality rate merits further investigation.
