ABSTRACT
The objective of this study was to characterize the pneumonia suffered by dairy calves in 12 dairies in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico using different housing for their animals. Pneumonic problems occurred more in dairies that housed their calves inside a building, than those using exterior calf hutches reporting the least mortality rate from pneumonia. Lung samples were obtained from a total of 100 calves (15 to 150 days of age) with a history of pneumonia, and were incubated at 37° C for 24 h in blood and chocolate agar in aerobiosis or microaerobiosis, respectively. Bacterial isolates were identified through biochemical routine methods, using reference strains as controls.
Pasteurella multocida was isolated from 34 animals;
P. haemolytica in 31, and
Haemophilus somnus in 11. In addition other bacteria, considered secondary lung invaders were isolated:
Streptococcus spp and
Staphylococcus spp in 12 and 7 animals, respectively. All isolated strains of
P. multocida and
P. haemolytica were classified as biotype A. Twenty six strains (83.9%) of
P. haemolytica were classified as A1, whereas only 2 strains (6.5%) were found to be A2. Three strains (9.6%) were not typeable.
