Induced Arthus reaction in the rabbit. lung has been proposed as a mechanism of tisular damage that could occur in some important pneumonias of domestic animals. The objective of this experiment was to pro voke an Arthus reaction in the lung of pigs in order to compare the lesions induced with those natural presentations in the main exudative pneumonias of swine. Ten animals, mixed breed, weighting 10 kg, were used for this purpose; nine out of them were included in three experimental groups, while one served as the control. The pigs included in the groups received ovalbumin with hidroxide aluminium as adjuvant by subcutaneous route. The control received a saline solution. Group A received 4 mg, group B, 16 mg, and group C, 32 mg of ovalbumin twice, 14 days apart. The animals were challenged at day 28 by endotracheal route employing 8, 32 and 80 mg of ovalbumin, respectively. The control animal received a saline solution endotracheally. All of them were sacrificed 12 hours after challenge.
Post mortem examination showed congestion and mild lung edema in several animals included in groups B and C. Microscopically, allanimals in the experimental groups showed an interstitial pneumonia characterized by mild alveolar edema with moderate polymorphonuclear interstitium infiltration. There was no consolidation nor evident polymorpho nuclear exudation. Lesions were more obvious in animals belonging to groups B and C. The control did not show any changes. Although compatible with an Arthus reaction in the lung, these lesions resulted mild in comparison with those reported in the rabbit. These results do not support the hypothesis that an Arthus reaction related mechanism, could have the main role during the naturally occurring exudative pneumonias of swine.
