Congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Two cases presentation

ABSTRACT

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia results from the incomplete fusion of the pleuroperitoneal membrane and occurs with a frequency of about 1/2000-5000 live-births. It is a life-threatening condition. Despite advances in neonatal intensive care and surgery, mortality varies from one institution to another and may be above 75%. We present the cases of two newborn babies with left-sided diaphragmatic hernia that allowed the passage of most of the abdominal viscerae into the thorax with only mild symptoms of respiratory failure. A review of the literature was made to know the modern trends in diagnosis, management and pre- and postnatal treatment of this defect.
