Trasplante pancreático y tolerancia inmunológica

RESUMEN
La época moderna del trasplante pancreático empezó en 1987 con la introducción del esquema cuádruple de inmunosupresión con base en azatioprina, prednisona, y ciclosporina, más la globulina antilinfocítica, la globulina antitimocítica, o los anticuerpos monoclonales (OKT-3). Actualmente se ha incrementado el éxito con el trasplante pancreático, pero paradójicamente se ha creado alta dependencia del manejo inmunosupresor con sus efectos colaterales, como mielosupresión y nefrotoxicidad. Nuevas técnicas dejan entrever la posibilidad del desarrollo de la tolerancia como principal objetivo para aceptar trasplantes, y que esta tolerancia sustituya a la inmunosupresión que acarrea riesgos peligrosos incluso para la vida.
