ABSTRACT
Background. Uveitis is the third most frequent injury found in ocular trauma. Purpose. Features of patients with pos-traumatic uveitis (PU) were identified, in order to know the visual impairment it conditioned, its association to other injuries, and whether inflammation modified visual capacity. Patients and methods. Ocular trauma cases between 1996 and 2003 were evaluated; those that had uveitis were included and re-qualified according to the System of clasifying mechanical injuries of the eye. Visual capacity, inflammation, intraocular pressure and additional injuries were studied. Grade and zone were compared between eyes with different inflammation degree with χ2. Results. 121 of 533 eyes had PU (22.7%, 95% confidence interval 19 to 26.3); 73 were included (age 5-53 years, mean 25.6), 84.9% had additional injuries. 89% of the eyes had type A trauma, 53.4% had grade 1, 95.9% had negative pupil, 56.2% had zone III and 60.3% + inflammation; intraocular pressure mean was 15.1 mm Hg; two eyes had hypotension. There were no differences regarding grade and zone, in eyes with different inflammation degree. Discussion. Although most patients with PU have minimal inflammation and visual impairment, additional injuries must be looked for, especially in the posterior segment. Hypotension was uncommon; it is recommended that other causes of it were looked for in patients with PU.REFERENCES
