ABSTRACT
Treatment of macular edema with photocoagulation in diabetics with retinopathy initially increases it; patients whose initial increase does not resolve early could have a higher rate of functional impairment before treatment. We identified whether visual deficiency before treatment was more frequent in patients with edema increase after photocoagulation than in patients without it, to learn if the latter could be useful as a predictor of response to treatment.
Methods. Foveal thickness was measured in diabetics with macular edema by optical coherence tomography, the day of treatment (prior to it) and three weeks after. Patients with thickness increase were included in group 1 and patients without it in group 2. Visual capacity and the rate of visual deficiency (visual capacity ‹ 0.5) were compared among groups (Mann-Whitney’s U, Fisher’s exact test).
Results. 16 eyes per group were evaluated. Mean visual capacity in group 1 was 0.38 (S.D. ± 0.31), in group 2 it was 0.31 (D.E. ± 0.18, p = 0.84); 9 eyes in group 1 (56.5%) and 8 in group 2 had visual deficiency (p=1).
Discussion. The presence of visual deficiency was not associated to an unfavorable response to photocoagulation three weeks after treatment; its presence should not be consider a predictor of the latter adverse response in diabetics with macular edema.
