ABSTRACT
Thyroid function has been studied largely in elderly people. The most ancient studies showed significantly changes on serum levels of thyroid hormones (TH) and thyrotropin (TSH), as well as a plain response of TSH to exogenous thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH). The recent studies have proved that most of these findings came from non-thyroidal illnesses and medications effects on the thyroid axis. Acute and chronic illnesses diminish T3 serum levels, and more severe illnesses also diminish T4. TSH levels can be normal, but also low in severe illnesses. In fact, beta-blockers and glucocorticoid and amiodarone can block peripheric conversion from T4 to T3, rising T4 levels and diminish T3. For these reasons, thyroid function in the elderly must be evaluated considering the possible effects of the drugs for no-thyroidal illnesses.
