ABSTRACT
In B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CL ), different prognostic factors have been proposed to predict the clinical course of the disease. Recently, there has been added a new prognostic factor defined by the expression of 70kDa protein that is associated with T-cell receptor zeta chain and known as ZAP -70. This protein is not expressed in normal B lymphocytes but is expressed in those of a B-CL subgroup which do not display IgVH heavy chain variable-region gene mutations. Recent studies indicate that the expression of this protein in leukemic lymphocytes is associated to a more aggressive course of the disease. Likewise, it has been pointed out that the determination of
ZAP -70 can provide a simpler prognostic factor than the present characterization of the IgVH gene mutational state. Studies looking for this protein in Mexico have started, despite the fact that chronic lymphocytic leukemia in extremely infrequent in our country.
