ABSTRACT
Background: Obesity in Mexico is a very important public health issue, therefore, in December 1998 it was published the Official Mexican Guideline for Integral Management of Obesity. Body mass index (BMI) is one of the best clinical indicators of overweight and obesity. Controlling overweight and obesity among health personnel is a seldom studied area, unlike English spoken countries where complications associated to obesity and overweight are well documented.
Objective: To evaluate prevalence of overweight and obesity in nursing personnel at Clínica Hospital ISSSSTECALI of Ensenada.
Patients and methods: An observational, transversal study was performed in 107 nurses working at Clínica Hospital ISSSSTECALI of Ensenada. Weight, gender and BMI were assessed. Statistical analysis was performed with STATS v. 1.1 and Excel XP Pro.
Results: In the present study 80% of the participants were female. Age was from 21 to 64 years, with an average of 34.6, body weight was between 48 to 108 kg, average 67.13 kg, height was 147 cm to 170 cm, and average 159 cm. Prevalence was 18% for overweight and 37% for obesity.
Conclusion: This study shows that overweight and obesity in nursing personnel at Clínica Hospital ISSSTECALI is very important, because 55% has attained some degree of overweight or obesity. More studies are needed in order to identify and modify predisposing factors to increasing body weight in nurses, and achieve control in order to avoid known complications of these pathologies.
