ABSTRACT
Modern age of pancreatic transplants began in 1987, with the introduction of quadruple immunosuppresive therapy based on azathioprine, prednisone, cyclosporine, antilymphocytic globulin, antithymocytic globulin or monoclonal antibodies (OK-T3). Recently, successful outcomes have increased with the pancreatic transplant, however there is a high dependence to immunosuppressive therapy with its collateral effects such as myelosuppression and nephrotoxicity. New techniques are available that may help to develop tolerance, where the main objective is to succeed in all transplants by substituting immunosuppression and its dangerous, life-threatening side effects.
