ABSTRACT
Background: Diverse studies have been carried out in which the association between the levels of calcium and the depression presence (even with suicide intention) is mentioned.
Objective: To determine if there is a correlation between the depression grade and alterations of calcium serum levels.
Patients and method: 50 patients of the General Hospital Ticoman were included (18 to 82 years old), of both sexes, in whom we diagnosed the depression grade according to the scale of Beck and the total serum level of calcium was measured, they were submitted to test of Spearman to evaluate the correlation between the depression grade and the alteration of the level of seric calcium.
Results: 50 patients were included: 24 women (48%) and 26 men (52%), of these 17, 17 and 16 patients presented light, moderate and severe depression respectively, in 14 patients we determined decrease of the serum level of calcium, in 34 it was normal and in 2 it was high. r of 0.13 was obtained that is not statistically significant for a p › 0.05, thus, we did not find an association between serum level of calcium and depression.
Conclusions: There was not any association between alterations of the calcium and the depression grade.
