ABSTRACT
Background: Heart failure is characterized by the absolute of relative diminishment of cardiac output. Since 1980 decade programs of exercise are mentioned to offer benefits to patients with heart failure without causing functional class damage.
Objective: To assess the impact of a mixed exercise program in patients with systolic dysfunction of left ventricle on clinical, echocardiographic and of functional capacity variables in patients with heart failure.
Patients and methods: Seventy-three patients older than 18 years, of both sexes, with asymptomatic systolic ventricular dysfunction of more than three months of evolution with conventional pharmacological treatment. Group was divided into two, to perform or not programmed exercise. These groups were subdivided into two groups, of high and low risk, according to clinical characteristics of each patient. Participants were followed during six months.
Results: Thirty and six patients were incorporated to physical rehabilitation program and 37 to control group. Characteristics of each group were similar, except for the fact that control group had systolic blood pressure higher than exercise group’s.
Conclusions: Exercise programs reduce symptoms attributable to chronic heart failure, such as dyspnea and fatigue, due to its cardiovascular and muscle-skeletal effects. Despite of their benefits, physicians prescribe little rehabilitation programs.
