ABSTRACT
Pancreatitis is one the most frequent gastrointestinal diseases. Acute pancreatitis represents a great espectrum of diseases that may course with a variable severity range: since a self-limited relief, requiring hospitalization to be monitorized, to a fulminating progression resulting in multiple organic dysfunction syndrome with or without sepsis. It is necessary to perform a correct diagnosis of acute pancreatitis during the first 48 hours after admission, in order to identify patients with high risk of severe acute pancreatitis and, thus, avoid complications and diminish mortality related to this disease.
