ABSTRACT
Background: In accordance with experiments carried out in this investigation unit, it was found that the avocado oil administered to rabbits prevents the aterosclerosis taken place by the cholesterol. Objective: To determine if the avocado oil generates the regression of the aterosclerosis induced in the rabbits by the cholesterol.
Material and methods: Male rabbits were divided in three groups: the first one was the group control, to which was not induced aterosclerosis; the second and the third groups were managed in two stages. In the first one that lasted six months, aterosclerosis was induced administering cholesterol to 0.5% in the food. In the second stage, the second group continued receiving cholesterol during six months more, as long as at the third, during the same period, he was given, also, avocado oil.
Results: In the rabbits with aterosclerosis, and that later they continued receiving cholesterol, the avocado oil didn’t induce the regression of this suffering, the same as in those of the group control. This indicates that the aterosclerosis resists to the effect of the avocado.
Conclusions: The administration of avocado oil in aterosclerotics rabbits didn’t show regression of the aterosclerosis.
