ABSTRACT
Initial baby chick quality is very important for poultry producers to obtain important income. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of broilers of first quality and undergraded chicks. Eight hundred one day old broiler chicks Arbor Acres x Arbor Acres, were obtained. Half of them of a commercial producer with reference of undergraded quality, and the other half or controls of the same strain with a good poultry producer quality. The experiment was designed at random with two treatments, each one with four replicates of 100 birds. Data of performance was recorded each week. Results after 7 weeks indicated better final body weight performance (2298 vs 2129g), feed conversion (2.13 vs 2.20) and a general mortality (7.74 vs 17.72%) for the control broiler chicks. Feed consumption was higher (P ‹ 0.05) for the control (4823 vs 4609g). There was no difference regarding to ascites between treatments (4.42 vs 4.78%). In undergraded chicks, the cost of production was 8% higher, and this cost can in crease with the use of medicines to reduce mortality.REFERENCES
