ABSTRACT

The objective of this study, which lasted 215 days, was to evaluate the production of the associated culture of Macrobrachium rosenbergii and Oreochromis hornorum. Fertilizers added were: Cow manure and simple superphosfate plus complementary feeding. Two 100m² earth ponds (pond 1 and pond 2) were filled with rainfall water. These ponds were stocked with 13000/ha for each specie, with an initial mean weight of 0.576g for M. rosenbergii and 0.16g for O. hornorum. The addition of fertilizers was done twice a week and the amounts varied according to the water quality. Supplementary feeding was given at 3% of the biomass of O. hornorum everyday. The production obtained in the case of M. rosenbergii was 405.60kg/ha/year and mean weight of 26.5g in pond 1, and 41.62kg/ha/year and 64g average weight in pond 2. In O. hornorum the production obtained was 1956.94kg/ha/year and 98.30g average weight in pond 1; and 1233.26 kg/ha/year and 69.71g average weight in pond 2. The water quality played an important role, spec ally in pond 2 in which the overproduction of blue-green algae caused a low production due to the subsequent low concentration of disolved oxigen and possibly to the liberation of algae toxins. The survival percent in pond 2 was 3.84% and was attributed to this phenomenon, in opposite to pond 1, where the survival percent was 71.53%. This culture system is an interesting alternative food production for tropical regions from the social point of view.
