Cephalometric characteristics in class II maloclussion

ABSTRACT
The World Health Organization considers maloclussions as the third cause of dental disease. The present study describes the skeletal and dentoalveolar cephalometric characteristics of 58 patients clinically diagnosed as having class II malocclusion according to Angle’s original criteria. The cephalometric characteristics of Steiner, Jarabak, Wits and Bimler analysis were compared to diagnose and associate dental with skeletal class II maloclussion, according to gender and growing age. The study was carried out in 58 lateral cranial radiographies of patients who attended the Facultad de Odontología de la UNAM during August 2003 to February 2004, the data was analyzed by means of the “t” Student test with a level of significance of 0.05 or smaller, when comparing the gender and different groups of age with cephalometric variables. It was observed in the 71% with dental and skeletal class II maloclussion, mandibular alterations predominated in females and maxillar alterations in males. It was concluded that class II dental maloclussion not always correspond to a class II skeletal maloclussion.
