ABSTRACT
Selenium (Se) concentration in 31 hair samples of Holstein heifers from Tizayuca, Hidalgo, Mexico, which had died due to acute heart failure, and 38 Cebu cross healthy heifers from the States of Tabasco and Veracruz, is reported. Measurement of Se content was done by the atomic absorption spectrophotometry with a hydride generator. Only 7 of the 31 hair samples had levels of Se higher than 0.012 ppm. The mean Se concentration in heifers from Veracruz and Tabasco was 0.142 mg/kg. These two concentrations were statistically different, but were lower than the recommended in the literature. When the concentration of heifers from Tizayuca (0.063 ppm) was compared to the one in heifers from Tabasco and Veracruz (0.142 ppm), the former had a statistically lower concentration.
