ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to determine the incidence of congenital heart defects in replacement calves, that had died of right congestive heart failure (RCHF) ,and to establish the ratio of the right ventricular weight to the total heart weight (RV:T) in these animals, and compare them with those of calves that had died due to other causes. A group of 50 weaned Holstein calves (2 to 5 months of age), that had died of different causes in an intensive rearing establishment, was studied. The animals were born and had been living at an altitude of 2200 m above sea level in Mexico. The cause of death was classified in the following groups: bloat, pneumonia, diarrhea, right congestive heart failure and combinations of these. Twenty eight animals died of several types of pneumonia; 8 of them also presented diarrhea, 6 bloat, 16 developed RCHF and 11 of these also had pneumonia. No important congenital heart defects were found. The ratio of RV: Theart weights was significantly higher in the animals that had de veloped RCHF with or without pneumonia than in those that had not shown clinical signs of RCHF (P › 0.01). This study proves that at the altitude of 2200 m above sea level, hypoxia must be considered as an etiologic factor when Holstein calves suffer from RCHF.
