ABSTRACT
Introduction. Objective: To identify socioeconomic and dietary variables associated with iron deficiency in children from a rural area in Mexico.
Methods. Cross-sectional study in 132 children free from infectious or chronic diseases. Dependent variable: serum ferritin (SF) concentration; socioeconomic background and food frequency intake: as independent variables. A personal interview was conducted and serum concentrations of hemoglobin and SF were measured. Risk of iron deficiency was calculated with the odds ratio.
Results. Median age 87.0 months. Legumes and milk were the foods most frequently consumed, followed by junk food and eggs. The findings in preschool children were the following: 20% with anemia, 19.6% with SF ‹10 µg/L and 60.9 ‹20 µg/L; whereas findings in schoolchildren were: 7.4, 14.8 y 44.4%, respectively. Wall construction material (adobe) and inadequate disposal of trash and feces were associated with SF ‹10 µg/L; a higher number of children were associated to SF ‹20 µg/L.
Conclusion. Adverse environmental conditions and higher number of children were associated with iron deficiency. Prevention programs need to consider these characteristics to be more effective.
