ABSTRACT
Background: Scintigraphy is the reference method for the assessment of gastric emptying (GE), however breath analyses involving stable isotopes are nowadays considered good alternatives for this purpose, given their safety and non-invasiveness.
Aim: Correlate the mean time (t
1/2) of GE of solids assessed by scintigraphy versus the time obtained by breath test involving octanoic acid labelled with (
13C-OABT).
Methods: GE of solids was simultaneously measured by scintigraphy and by the
13C-PAO test after administration of meal test. It was content 240 ml of tea and an egg sandwich (380 Kcal) labelled with 0.5 mCi
99mTc-pertecnatat and 100 mg of
3C-octanoic acid.
Results: Ten healthy subjects were included, age 31 ± 3.9 yrs. A significative correlation of the t
1/2 of GE between scintigraphy and 13C-OABT with its conventional formula (r = 0.68, p = 0.0297) and “Mayo Clinic model” (r = 0.88, p = 0.0006) was found.
Conclusion: These results confirm the correlation between GE measurements with scintigraphy and
13C-OABT.
