ABSTRACT
Headache is one of the most frequent symptoms in clinical work. It is probably the first cause of consultation. Its correct identification, provided by a detailed clinical history, is essential for its adequate diagnosis and treatment. It is generally a benign condition, although, in some cases it may be significantly incapacitating. It is of outmost importance to recognize the red flags, which allow the differentiation between a primary and a secondary headache disorder. Headaches in women present peculiar features that influence in there management. This article describes the types of primary headaches, there pathophysiology, symptoms and correct management. It is expected that after careful consideration any physician will be able to understand the incidence and prevalence of headache, identify the different types, their pathophysiology and adequate treatment, as well as to recognize the red flags suggestive of secondary headache.
