ABSTRACT
Both quality and amount of sleep may be altered under the effects of the varied stressful events taking place during wakefulness. Stress induced sleep anomalies may be considered from a bi-directional point of view, since stress induces sleep anomalies and sleep anomalies induce stress. Sleep deprivation is devastating to proper functioning, a sleep deprived person is temporarily affected in several aspects of his daily life, besides the physiological stress response the person shows sluggishness of thought, reduced attention, difficult to concentrate to perceive accurately, fatigue and irritability, nervousness, foul mood. The EEG study in sleep deprived rats, displays decrement in the interhemispheric correlation in all leads except in the temporal region. Similarly in the stressed rat, if concomitantly deprived of paradoxical sleep, reduced interparietal correlation appears, possibly due to involvement of hippocampal arousal levels subsequent to the already impaired interhemispheric correlation. The exact significance of some of the sleep functions still remains to be clarified; however, it can be stated that the amount and quality of sleep are important factors to maintain health and well being of the human person.
