ABSTRACT
Introduction. Intussusception is one of the most common and serious acute abdominal surgical pathologies in children and a frequent cause of severe complications. When there are no indications for a primary laparotomy the approach at the Moctezuma Children’s Hospital (Hospital Pediátrico Moctezuma), includes a clinical examination and one or several attempts to obtain a disinvagination with the aid of barium enemas.
Material and methods. A retrospective review of the records of 190 children treated for intussusception in our hospital between the years of 2000 and 2005 was conducted in order to know how many had an organic cause for this condition. Twenty-six patients with this condition were 12 months of age or older. In this group of seven (26.9%) there was an organic cause: four, a Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) and three, a Meckel’s diverticulum (MD).
Conclusions. We propose that insussusception in children over one year of age that cannot be reduced by hydrostatic barium enema, require a surgical intervention.
