ABSTRACT
In developed countries, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the most common cause of death between 30 days and 12 months of life. There are simple and of low-cost recommendations to diminish the incidence of SIDS by almost 50%. In Mexico the real incidence of SIDS is unknown and there are no guides to diminish its risk.
Aim: To determine what doctors recommend in Mexico, to reduce the risk of SIDS.
Material and methods: In the XXIV World Congress of Pediatrics, a survey took place regarding doctors’ recommendations to reduce the risk of SIDS.
Results: Of 294 analyzed surveys, 62% do not provide any recommendations to diminish the risk of SIDS. Only 25% recommend the supine position of infants to sleep.
Conclusions: In Mexico it is necessary to divulge the recommendations to reduce the risk of SIDS, among the health personnel as well as among the entire population.
