Muerte súbita del lactante. Qué hacemos y qué debemos hacer para prevenirla

RESUMEN
En países desarrollados el síndrome de muerte súbita del lactante (SMSL) es la causa principal de muerte infantil entre los 30 días y los 12 meses de vida. Existen recomendaciones sencillas y de bajo costo, que permiten disminuir su frecuencia hasta 50%. En México se desconoce la frecuencia real del SMSL y no hay lineamientos para disminuir su riesgo.
Objetivo: Determinar qué recomiendan en México los médicos, para disminuir el riesgo de SMSL.
Material y métodos: En el XXIV Congreso Mundial de Pediatría, se hizo una encuesta sobre las recomendaciones de médicos para disminuir el riesgo del SMSL.
Resultados: De 294 encuestas analizadas, 62% no proporciona ninguna recomendación para disminuir el riesgo de SMSL. Sólo 25% recomiendan la posición del lactante boca arriba para dormir.
Conclusiones: Es necesario difundir a toda la población de México las recomendaciones para disminuir el riesgo del SMSL, empezando por el personal de salud.
