ABSTRACT
Objective. To determine the epidemiologic data for hand accidents in a one-year span. Material and methods. Records of trauma patients from January through December 1999 were assessed in searching for trauma injuries of the hand. Results. Out of 15,080 patients who were discharged in one year, 4,008 had a hand injury (26.51%). Lesions were undergone on duty in 3,122 (20.7%) out of the whole or 77.9% from hand injuries. Gender ratio was 2,520 for males (80%) and 602 for females (20%). Age was 16 to 70 years, however the highest frequency was for the third decade with 1,238 cases (39.65%), followed by the fourth decade with 713 (22.83%) for a partial 1,951 (62.48%) if considering the 20-39 years group. More frequent injuries were wounds (21.7%) followed by crushing (16.4%) and by diverse 2nd to 5th finger amputations (13.5%). Conclusion. The proposal after this review is that permanent preventive and educational programs must be established in order to improve labour and home security, intended to avoid hand injuries which can produce physical and psychological disability in productive people.REFERENCES
