ABSTRACT
Objective. The aim of present study is to allow athletes, an early come back to sports after ankle sprains, avoiding long lasting immobilization periods.
Materials and methods. A series of 113 cases of ankle sprain, out of a whole 571 injuries (28.7%) were recorded through the 1993, 1994 and 1995 seasons of soccer foot ball at our University, which included the professional Major League team as well as the younger divisions teams’ players, ranging from age 12 years up to 30. Upgrading treatment consisted on 1) 72 h of cryotherapy and adhesive ankle bandage, 2) active movements at 24 h as well as electric stimulation, 3) propioception as well as stretching and strengthening exercises of the gastroc muscle and heel cord at 48 h, 4) progressive jumping and running in a 50-meter and 10% inclination slop, and finally 5) sprinting and all the appropriate drills for soccer foot ball.
Results. Full recovery was obtained for 78 cases of grade I ankle sprain in a period from 2 to 65 days, average 10.7 (± 8.71 SD) and for 34 cases of grade II, it was from 3 to 52 days, average 16.2 (± 10.73 SD). There was only one case of grade III, who had to be operated on because of instability after 251 days.
Conclusion. An intended early and active rehabilitation program shortens the inhabilitation span for professional athletes who suffer grade I and II ankle sprains.
