ABSTRACT
Objective. To evaluate the treatment of varus angular disease for the unicompartimental arthrotic knee, by proximal tibial osteotomy and plaster cast.
Material and methods. This is a series of 30 patients, 17 female and 13 male, aged from 18 to 89 years (average 53.3), who were operated on from March 1996 through August 1999. Extremity was immobilized after surgery by plaster cast for 10 to 12 weeks. Post-operative follow-up was at least for one year.
Results. Were good in 26 cases (86%), fair in 2 and poor in 2. Transoperative correction must be carried out into a range from 10 to 13 degrees, since an average of 3 to 4 degrees become lost in the postoperative period. Clinical results of osteotomy remain useful for a 2 to 12 year-span according to the severity of preoperative arthrosis.
Conclusion. Valgus osteotomy for initial treatment of medial varus arthrosis of the knee is still a reliable procedure when patient does not address complete criteria for total knee replacement.
