Internal fixation with sponge screw in the knee pseudoarthrosis of the scaphoid bone

ABSTRACT
Objective. To evaluate the results of internal fixation by a 4 mm spongial screw and bone grafting for carpal navicular pseudoarthrosis.
Material and methods. Twelve male patients aged 27 to 53 years (average 37.8) who had non-union of carpal navicular were operated on by debridement of fibrous tissue, screwing and spongial bone grafting which was taken from the previously resected styloid process of the radius. No immobilization was used and gentle rehabilitation sarted at 4th post-operative day.
Results. Bone-union was achieved in 11 out of the 12 patients at an average of 6 weeks after operation. The remaining one, who had been formerly treated by surgery at the time of fracture did not heal after present operation and required late wrist arthrodesis. No case of nechrosis did occur in the present series.
Conclusion. The operation proposed here is considered a rather easy, functional and high benefit procedure; however, proper information must be advised to patients prior to surgery, in order to obtain cooperation enough as long as bone healing is achieved.
