ABSTRACT
Introduction. The influence of birth weight evaluated as a risk factor to develop nosocomial infections in neonates admitted in an intensive care unit.
Methods. An epidemiological study was carried out in a third-level care medical unit in Mexico City. Nosocomial infection rate, endemic channel, simple frequencies and odds ratio (OR) were calculated for this analysis.
Results. The nosocomial infection rate was 30.7 x 100 neonates leaving the hospital. Neonates whose weight was less than 1 000 g were 60.2%. This group had a higher risk to develop neonatal nosocomial infection (OR 38.1, CI95% 16.83-86.73), and different microorganisms were isolated from 51.5% neonates. Gram-positive bacilli were the most frequent.
Conclusions. Birth weight is a risk factor to develop nosocomial infections in neonates in an intensive care unit.
