ABSTRACT
ARDS was first described in 1967 and was characterized as dyspnea, hypoxemia and bilateral infiltrates in the thorax radiography. Initially the «A» in ARDS meant «adult» and it was used to differentiate this syndrome from the infantile form. Since 1994 the «A» stands for «acute», because ARDS occurs in all ages.
We define ARDS as the presence of non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema and respiratory failure, characterized by increased permeability of the aveolar-capillary membrane, diffuse alveolar damage, and the accumulation of proteinaceous pulmonary edema.
Is one of the main causes of mortality in the Intensive Care Units.
There are no specific treatment that correct the pulmonary damage, however the use of appropriate strategies of mechanical ventilation and pharmacological therapies have led to a more favorable outcome.
