ABSTRACT
Objective: To describe our experience in the surgical treatment of atrial septal defect in adults in a National Medical Center.
Setting: Third level health care hospital.
Design: Transversal, observational, descriptive, retrolective.
Statistical analysis: Percentages as summary measure for qualitative variables.
Patients and methods: We reviewed the clinical records of 227 patients corresponding to the period from January 1996 to December 2006. We analyzed the following variables: gender, age, characteristics of the atrial septal defect, surgical treatment performed, associated cardiac pathology, and evolution.
Results: We studied 227 patients with a diagnosis of atrial septal defect, average age of 37.70 years; women predominated. According to the anatomical site, the septal defect corresponded to: 213
ostium secundum, 10
sinus venosus, and 4
ostium primum. The surgical treatment consisted of direct closure and placement of a graft made of synthetic material or autologous pericardium. Mean follow-up was of 72 months, and survival at 5 years was of 98.6%.
Conclusion: Surgical treatment for the closure of atrial septal defects still produces goods results in our milieu and has demonstrated its efficacy for several years with a good evolution and has led to a decline in morbidity and mortality in the present days.
