ABSTRACT
The emotional environment in the family has been studied and it has been found out as a predicting factor in psychiatric disorders. Emotion Expressed (EE) is a construct which allows us to understand the relapse mechanisms.
Objectives: This study’s goal is to review EE predictive efficiency regarding the clinical course followed by ED patients during a six-month follow-up. To research the correlation existing between the EE level and the symptomatic severity of the ED.
Material: Fourty-two patients, fulfilling the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for some ED. The Yale-Brown-Cornell Scale for ED was used to evaluate the degree of symptomatic severity. Guanilo-Seclén’s Questionnaire-Survey-Evaluation was used to measure the EE level.
Method: The diagnostic evaluation and the instruments application were conducted at the onset of the study and after a six-month treatment period, both to patients and responsible relatives. Descriptive statistics, repeated measures analysis, Pearson’s correlation, and the T Test for related samples were used for the statistical analysis. The structural analysis was validated through AMOS.
Results: The change in the hostility was correlated with an improvement in the ED symptomatic severity, specially in the eating behavior rituals.
Conclusion: EE seems to be a significative predictor in the course followed by ED.
