ABSTRACT
The intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation pump (IABP), was developed with the purpose of offering circulatory support in the patients with surgical revascularization and cardiogenic shock. The IABP has become a significant component of treatment in patients with severe left heart failure. This is performed by inflating and deflating a 30-50 mL balloon placed in the thoracic aorta. The IABP indications are, heart failure that not respond to fluid reanimation and inotropic support; heart failure complicated by the rupture of interventricular septum or mitral regurgitation with the necessity of hemodynamic stabilization and if the heart failure is accompanied by myocardial ischaemia that eventually goes to coronary angiography and revascularization. The present review is focused first in the description of the insertion and handling of the IABP, its hemodynamical effects and the repercussion on cardiac cycle, and finally making emphasis in the specific indications.
