ABSTRACT
This is a double-blind clinical trial which was carried out from September 1997 to July 1998 by 2 comparative ramdom groups of 15 cases each, aged more than 15 years, over 40 kilogrames of body weight and ASA 1-II, and an acute intra-articular injury of the knee which were candidates to arthroscopic treatment. Group A patients were treated by bupivacaine 0.5% and epinephrine 1:200,000 and 100 mg fenthanyl at 30 ml. Group B were treated by bupivacaine 0.5% and epinephrine 1:200,000 at 30 ml. Trans and postoperative pain control was assessed. Results demonstrated no significant difference at analogue visual scale for transoperative pain (p= 0.4932). However postoperative results demonstrated better pain control in group A patients who received fenthanyl (p= 0.0353). Once disclosed confusion factors such as age, body weight, gender, long-lasting of surgery and latency, it is concluded that better results were obtained when fenthanyl was included as anesthetic agent.
