ABSTRACT
Objective: Describing a case report of post-intubation parotiditis and reviewing related literature.
Case report: A 76-year-old female patient was admitted to the ICU with diagnosis of respiratory failure secondary to pneumonia. The patient required orotracheal intubation and nasogastric tube. After 24 hours with mechanical ventilatory support, the patient developed enlargement of the right parotid gland. Ultrasound revealed a right parotid gland measuring 6.52 cm by 4.22 cm, compared to the left gland, which measured 4.12 cm by 2.03 cm. A diagnosis of post-intubation parotiditis was made and the patient was treated with anti-inflammatory drugs, showing clinical relief within 72 hours.
Conclusions: Post-intubation parotiditis is a rare and self-limited disorder associated to anesthetic and endoscopic procedures. It is secondary to glandular edema and saliva retention.
