ABSTRACT
Background
Augmentation mentoplasty provides an excellent refinement of the face contours. It can be performed as a single surgery as together with another procedures of aesthetic type.
Objective
To analyze the results obtained after chin augmentation with alloplastic implants.
Patients and methods
Retrospective, cross-sectional, observational and analytical. Over a 21-months period (January 2003 to October 2004) we evaluated patients with diagnosis of microgenia underwent chin augmentation with alloplastic implants in the Facial Surgery and Cosmetology Clinic, Puebla. Data about physical examination, facial analysis, technique and surgical findings as well as postoperatory complications were obtained. In all the cases the chin projection was determined by González Ulloa’s method. There were used soft silicone implants which were placed by intraoral approach with a “non touch” technique during its positioning. The paired T test was used to establish the pre and postoperatory difference.
Results
100 patients were included; mean age, 28 years (SD 13), 79% female. The mean follow-up was 9 months (SD 6.3). The average of the pre and postoperatory chin projection angles was 75° (SD 3.9) and 85° (SD 2.6) respectively (p ‹ 0.001). The mean degrees of gain in the chin projection was 9.5 (SD 3.9; p ‹ 0.001). Infection (2%) and displacement of the implant (1%) was reported.
Conclusion
Augmentation mentoplasty constitutes a simple procedure with a low percentage of complications that provides spectacular results in the refinement of the face contours.
