ABSTRACT
Objective: To present a case of textiloma, how it was managed, and to review the literature, to raise awareness in the surgical community of the latent risk in spite of effective measures.
Description: A 27 year old woman, with a history of abdominal surgery nine months before. Abdominal mass measured 12 x 12 cm, evolution of pain of four months. Simple abdominal X ray demonstrated the radio opaque marker of an abdominal gauze, which was extracted during surgery, leaving it´s capsule drained. The patient had favorable evolution.
Conclusion: The textiloma is infrequent, but always embarrassing and potentially dangerous, both, medically and legally, and the precise human and system factors involved haven’t been fully determined. The sole complete count is not an absolute guarantee that no gauze has been left in the patient. The removal surgery should be as simple as possible.
