ABSTRACT
Purpose: To compare the presence of
Staphylococcus epidermidis biofilm-producing in patients with blepharoconjunctivitis and normal control group. Determined the ability to produce biofilm and antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
Method: Prospective cases controls study,
S. epidermidis was isolated from eyelid and conjunctival swabs obtained from 47 patients with blepharoconjunctivitis and 46 controls, the presence of biofilm was tested, also the susceptibility to six antibiotics. The results were studied with χ
2.
Results: S. epidermidis biofilm-producing was found in 70% of patients with blepharoconjunctivitis and 43% without blepharoconjunctivitis (p ‹ 0.05). In patients with blepharoconjunctivitis the degree of biofilm formation was higher. Susceptibility to erythromycin, vancomycin, ciprofloxacin, gatifloxacin, chloramphenicol and oxacyllin do not show differences between
S. epidermidis producing and no-producing biofilm.
Conclusions: S. epidermidis biofilm-producing was isolated more frequently from patients with blepharoconjunctivitis, in this group the ability to produce biofilm was higher. Susceptibility to six antimicrobials was similar in
S. epidermidis producing and no-producing biofilm.
