ABSTRACT
Penetrating keratoplasty (PK) for herpetic keratitis is considered of high risk, existing recurrence possibility and failure of the graft in 26%. Transfer Factor is considered an effective immunomodulator in the treatment of fungical and viral infections and, combined to the conventional treatment they can be useful in these cases.
Objective: To evalute the transfer factor (FT) as adjuvant in the conventional treatment of patients with PK for herpetic keratitis.
Material and methods: Observational case series, retrospective, descriptive study of patients with diagnosis of herpetic keratitis following corneal transplantation from January 2003 to December 2005 and adjuvant treatment with FT.
Results: 8 patients; 5 men and 3 women, 17-41 years. 4 patients presented corneal rejection, 3 without viral activity and control of the episode. A patient with corneal rejection and viral activity displayed necrosis of the corneal button, requiring tectonic and amniotic membrane graft. Attachment to the treatment with FT was to regulate in all the patients, except in who displayed necrosis, being received FT just two occasions previous to transplant.
Conclusions: FT as helping in patients with PK can diminish the reactivation of herpetic keratitis, diminishing the corneal rejection.
