ABSTRACT
GERD represents a symptomatic reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus. It represents a public health problem of multiple etiologies. Prevalence reaches 2% and it is more common in women. Most important risk factors for GERD include hiatal hernia and increased intra-abdominal pressure. Diagnosis is based on personal report, esophagic manommetry, 24 hour pHmetry (gold standard), or endoscopy. Other tests used when there is doubt about diagnosis are Berstein test and acid suppression test. Laparoscopy has been gaining weight and now it is considered first choice by many surgeons and institutions. Globally, it is related to shorter hospital stay and convalescence, although rates of postoperatory complications are not shorter in comparison to open techniques.
