ABSTRACT
Objective: To describe our surgical experience in congenital cardiopathies in the adult at a National Medical Center.
Setting: Third level health care hospital.
Design: Transversal, observational, descriptive, retrolective study.
Statistical analysis: Percentages as summary measure for qualitative variables.
Patients and methods: We reviewed the clinical records of 334 patients corresponding to the period from January 1995 to December 2006. We analyzed the following variables: gender, age, congenital cardiopathy, surgical treatment performed, and aggregated cardiac pathology.
Results: We report on 334 patients, 75 men and 259 women, their ages ranged from 18 to 65 years. Frequency of pathologies were: 250 inter-atrial communication, 29 persistent patent ductus arteriosus, 22 inter-ventricular communication, 19 aortic coarctation, 8 subaortic stenoses, 3 Ebstein’s anomalies, 3 Fallot’s tetralogies. Different surgical procedures were performed according to the pathology and its anatomic location and the aggregated cardiac pathology.
Conclusion: Surgical treatment of congenital cardiopathies at our Institution lies within international standards, and is safe and beneficial. A decrease in morbidity and mortality has also been achieved due to an improved participation of pediatric cardiology in the diagnoses of these diseases.
