Qualitative description of psychological care in critical areas of the Hospital Ángeles Metropolitano

ABSTRACT
Patients in critical areas at Hospital Angeles Metropolitano, present emotional symptoms that require psychological attention during their stay. The aim of this study is to describe the demographics characteristics and the symptoms of this patients when they stay at the critical areas of the hospital (Coronary Care Unit– CCU and Intensive Care Unit– ICU). Also it is described the kind of psychological intervention more used in the Department of Hospital Psychological Intervention (IPH). The sample was of 368 patients, and the kinds of psychological intervention were: psychoeducation, supporting therapy and crisis intervention. The emotional symptoms between CCU and ICU were also compared. Of the sample, 60% were male and 40% were female, the mean age was 61 years. 60% of the interventions were with patients and 40% with the patients family. According to the classification of the psychological interventions, 70% were supporting therapy, 20% were psychoeducation and 10% were crisis intervention. The more used techniques were: emotional contention, problems solving and the building of alternative thoughts. Patients in CCU had more problems in their daily stress management and life styles less healthy, while in ICU, the family had high anxiety levels, and functional stiff in the problem solving process. It is discussed the importance of this information for the buiding of an instrument that could evaluate the efficacy of the intervention with patients and family in ICU, and the creation of a workshop for support CCU patients.
