ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the labor satisfaction of anesthesiologists working at Petroleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) facilities outside Mexico City and the risk factors for dissatisfaction.
Method: A cross sectional survey was conducted with anesthesiologists working at PEMEX hospitals located in the states of Guanajuato, Veracruz, Tamaulipas, Monterrey and Tabasco. A previously validated questionnaire was applied and the survey took place from June to September of 2005. The dependent variable was anesthesiologists’ labor satisfaction.
Results: Labor satisfaction of anesthesiologists was 76.3%. The risk factors for dissatisfaction were uncleanness of facilities (75.9%), stress attached to each anesthetic procedure (72.4%), maintenance of the anesthetic machine (72.5%), risk for acquiring some infection (72.5%), working shifts (62.1%) and the noise in the surgical room (62.1%).
Conclusions: 79.3% of anesthesiologists were satisfied. This is higher than observed among anesthesiologists working in developed countries (75.0%) or those working in Mexico City (59.0%). The operating room working conditions and the workload influence anesthesiologists’ satisfaction.
