ABSTRACT
There are more risks with surgical site infections associated with the care of health personnel. The World Health Organization issued recommendations to prevent them; and, to evaluate whether they are correctly applied, committees that supervise health personnel are formed. This work aims at showing a self-assessment method based on a negative microbiological culture in the immediate postoperative period. Four cultures were taken: one, on admission, another, in the immediate postoperative period, and another two, on the first and fifth days of hospital discharge, in 80 patients who underwent plastic surgery. Cochran's Q statistical method was used to compare the results of the four cultures and the McNemar and Odds Ratio method was used to evaluate each of the possible variations. The immediate postoperative group that received surgical site infection prevention had one of the most negative cultures. This result is statistically significant with both Cochran's Q, McNemar's test and the Odds ratio test. We conclude that negative bacteriological culture is a reliable and viable marker to self-assess the effectiveness of health personnel directly involved in surgery and the place where it is carried out.
