ABSTRACT
Objective: To compare the result of the tonal audiometry of patients recovered from COVID-19 with a positive test vs population without a history of COVID-19.Materials and Methods: A comparative cross-sectional observational study performed in patients from 18 to 50 years, of both sexes, residents of the Guadalajara metropolitan area. A group of participants with a history of COVID-19 in the three months prior to the audiometry and another group of participants with no known history of the disease were formed. Type of sampling: non-probabilistic of consecutive cases that met the selection criteria from April to June 2022. A clinical history and tone audiometry were performed on the patients with the AD629 audiometer (Interacoustics® AD629) with Tdh39 headphones (Interacoustics® Tdh39) in a clinical sound-damped booth to assess hearing threshold. Air conduction threshold was measured at frequencies from 125 to 8 kHz.
Results: There were included 60 patients; 30 in each group. Six participants in the group with a history of COVID-19 presented a decrease in hearing threshold at 3k, 4k, 6k and 8k frequencies in the right ear. One patient in the group with a history of COVID-19 presented profound sensorineural hearing loss in the left ear.
Conclusions: Audiological follow-up should be provided to patients with COVID-19, as well as research projects carried out in this regard with longer-term follow-up to assess the behavior of the hearing lesion.
